What Is Business English? Study Methods That Work

Career English (sometimes called professional or workplace English) is the language you need at work. Not a tourist phrasebook. Not only exam grammar. Meetings, emails, interviews, and the words of your field.

If you live in Cyprus and use English with clients or managers, this is usually what you are missing: you “know English”, but the hour at work still feels tight.

Zuhal Şangar works on career English in Girne, one-to-one. The notes below are the methods we actually use.

What career English is (and is not)

It is:

  • the language of meetings: interrupting politely, agreeing, asking for time
  • emails that sound clear, not copied from a template you never edit
  • interviews and the story of your experience
  • words from your job: finance, tourism, medicine, tech, school admin

It is not:

  • memorising 50 “business idioms” you will never say
  • a full MBA in English
  • the same worksheet for every student

See the career program for how this sits next to exam prep and private lessons.

Five study methods that hold in real life

1. Steal from your own week

Bring one real email, one slide, or one sentence you froze on. We rebuild that, not a fake dialogue about “Mr Smith in London”. Career English sticks when it is your Tuesday.

2. One function per lesson

Do not chase “all business English”. Pick a function: request, refuse, clarify, summarise. Practise it until it comes out without a script. Next week, another function.

3. Speak first, tidy second

Many professionals write well and freeze when they talk. We speak first, then we tidy three phrases. Fluency before decoration.

4. A tiny daily loop

Ten minutes is enough if it is the same loop: read your own email aloud, change two verbs, send a voice note. Big weekend study dies after two weeks. A small loop in Girne life survives.

5. Rehearse the room

If you have a meeting or interview, we rehearse it. Timing, the first sentence, the pause when you do not know a word. Exam stress and work stress use the same tools.

How a lesson in Kyrenia is built

  1. You name the situation (meeting, mail, interview).
  2. We find the English you already have.
  3. We add a short set of phrases you can reuse.
  4. You leave with one practice for the week.

Lessons are in English or Turkish. The aim is for more of the hour to be English, used the way your job needs it.

Common traps

  • Collecting word lists you never say out loud
  • Only reading news and calling it “business English”
  • Waiting to be “ready” before you book a real conversation

Readiness comes from the conversation, not before it.

Start here

If you want career English in Girne, write what you do at work and where you get stuck. The contact form opens WhatsApp with that note. We set a free first conversation, then a regular slot.

Career English is not a new personality. It is the English of your job, practised until it feels like you.
